Pattern of the World
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
What is Molding Your Life?
- The Problem - The Pattern is Defective
Conformed (συνμορφόω): molding to fit a pattern
1 Peter 1:14 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance.”
1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
3 Components play out in a million applications.
- Lust of the eyes ( Passion to have)
- Lust of the flesh (Passion to feel)
- Pride of life (passion to be.. position, be seen, important etc)
- The Solution: Change Our Way of Thinking
TIP # 1 Realize you are no longer a minion of the world
Ephesians 4:17-19 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed
Tip # 2 Feed your Mind from the Word of God.
Psalms 119:9-11 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
- The result is pleasing to God
Romans 12:2 Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
