Spiritual Gifts Part 2

2 Timothy 1:6-7 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Romans 12:4-8  4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,  5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.  6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.  7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;  8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Ephesians 4:11-12 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the  pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the  body of Christ may be built up

*Spiritual Gifts are presented in scripture in the context of  connection to the community*

10 Principles of Spiritual Gifts

Principle 1: We must learn about Spiritual Gifts

Principle 2: There are many Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Principle 3: God Arranges Us as a Body

Principle 4: Spiritual gifts are not the same as Christian Duty

Principle 5: The unseen gifts are to be honored  more than the visual gifts

A: We do NOT all have the same gift.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts.”

B: But every part is essential

1 Corinthians 12:21-25 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the  head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that  are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

Principle 6: Spiritual gifts are of no value if they are not driven by Christian character

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I  give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Your gift will only be as effective as the trust you have earned with others by your genuine love.

Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere.

Principle 7: The Holy Spirit determines the  distribution of the gifts

1 Corinthians 12:11 “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines”

1 Corinthians 12:4-6  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same   Spirit distributes them.5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Principle 8: We are to eagerly desire the gifts that build up the church

1 Corinthians 14:12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try  to excel in those that build up the church

Principle 9: Spiritual Gifts are only a part of my ministry

What is Your Heart's Passion?

What is your God Given Personality?

What Has God Brought You Through?

Educational: What I have learned. About life? About God? The Bible? About people? Formal education, informal education.

Spiritual: Where was I before I knew Jesus? What other ways did I try to find  God? Or fill his place in life? How did God save me?

Vocational: Where I have contributed in the past, and where have I worked? What did these experiences do for me

Painful: What has hurt me the most in life? What can God do with that experience? Words Hurt. Loses Hurt. Abuse hurts. Divorce Hurts.

Principle 10: 2 pitfalls to avoid with gifts

#1 Gift Comparison

#2 Gift-projection
