Judgmental Attitudes Hurt

Romans 14: 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

1 Corinthians  4:4-5 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the  Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

Help those who have encountered the very real condescending, graceless judgmental ATTITUDE that is sometimes present in people toward others.

It's NOT new

Jesus Had to Address it

  1. Short parable in Luke 18

Luke 18:9-14 9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The  Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to  heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those  who humble themselves will be exalted.”

  1. Luke 6:37-38 Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38  Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Paul Addressed it

  1. To the church in Corinth

  1. Church at Rome

Romans 14:15 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom  Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, vs20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

  1. Is this my role?

Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

  1. WHY do I do this?

Romans 14:10 10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt?

We tend to be the most judgmental in most unhealed areas of OUR own life, including our own weakness, past failure, or pain

Romans 14:10 10b Or why do you treat them with contempt?

  1. Do I think I can do a better job than God?

Romans 14:10-12 10b For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written:“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” 12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

1 Corinthians 4:5 "So do not judge anything before the  appointed time, but wait until the Lord comes, for He will both bring  to light the [secret] things that are hidden in darkness and disclose  the motives of the hearts

  1. Is this helping others to follow Jesus?

Romans 14:13-20 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead,  make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a  brother or sister. 19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for  the sake of food.

If you have suffered…

  1. Know your worth in God's eyes.
  2. Forgive the sin. Releasing them.

  1. Show the grace you did not receive
